Did you know that there are three types of sleep apnea? There is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea, and mixed sleep apnea. OSA, the most common type of sleep apnea, occurs when the body’s airway become obstructed, causing oxygen levels to decrease and carbon dioxide levels to increase. Consequently, sensors in a person’s brain are alerted and wake that person up (in severe cases, this can happen hundreds of time per night). People with central sleep apnea experience problems with the aforementioned brain sensors or with the part of the brain that regulate breathing. Finally, there is mixed sleep apnea; people with this type experience aspects of OSA and central sleep apnea.
