Caterpillar implements innovative technologies in their trucks to prevent driver fatigue

Caterpillar has partnered with Seeing Machines to equip their more than 5,000 vehicles at mines around the world with facial recognition software that can identify drowsy drivers. Given that mines can and do operate 24/7, the company recognized that their drivers were at risk of operating while tired. The system works by scanning for signs of micro sleep and then alerts on-site management that their driver may need to rest. Since Caterpillar has installed the software in its fleet in 2015, the company estimates that fatigue events on its works sites have dropped 80 percent. The John Lindsay Foundation supports the use of innovative technologies can reduce truck driver fatigue.
